In ancient Israel, Nazirites were people with fervent faith who made a special vow to God and imposed certain religious ritual rules on themselves. In Hebrew, nāzîr means "sanctified person," and vowees abide by rules such as abstaining from wine and not cutting their hair. There are temporary vows and lifelong vows, and Samson is an example of the latter, and the rules regarding his hair are an important part of the Samson story. Paul also took a vow and became a Nazirite temporarily. [Namiki Koichi] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
