Heraclius (English spelling) Hērakleios
575-641
Byzantine Emperor. Reigned 610-641. As the son of the governor of Carthage, he led an army to defeat the tyrant Phocuses, and after the latter's abdication, he ascended to the throne and founded the Heraclian dynasty (610-695, 705-711). He attempted to rescue the Byzantine Empire, which was in a difficult situation between the Slavs in the Balkans, the Avars, and the Persians in Anatolia. He invaded Persia under Khosrow II (622-628), won the Battle of Nineveh (627), and captured the capital Ctesiphon the following year, putting an end to the Persian campaign.
