1003‐61 Persian poet. Born in a region of Balkh, he became a financial official in Merv under the Seljuk Empire, but in 1045 he made a pilgrimage to Mecca and converted to Ismailism in Egypt. After returning from Balkh, he was persecuted and spent the rest of his life in seclusion in the mountains of Badakhshan. His travelogue Safar Nāma is a valuable historical source for learning about the situation in various places, including Egypt under the Fatimid dynasty, and his collection of poems Diwan is also important for the study of literary history and Ismailism.
