Bolas spider (English spelling)

Japanese: ナゲナワグモ（英語表記）bolas spider

A general term for spiders of the family Araneidae in the order Araneae in the class Arachnida that perform a rope-throwing style of catching insects. In the narrow sense, it refers to the American species Mastophora bisaccata . They are about 1 cm long, and many have a large abdomen with several pairs of protrusions. During the day, they stay still on the undersides of leaves, and from dusk to night, they spin threads with sticky balls attached to the tips of their first or second legs, which they use to hit and entangle approaching moths. They are said to release an attractant to attract males of specific moths. About 30 species in four genera, including the genera Ordgarius hobsoni and Ordgarius sexspinosus, are known to exist mainly in the tropics of the world. In Japan, two species, Ordgarius hobsoni and Ordgarius sexspinosus , are found in areas south of southern Honshu. (→Arachnida)

クモ綱クモ目コガネグモ科のクモのうち，投げ繩式捕虫行動をする種類の総称。狭義にはアメリカ産の Mastophora bisaccataをさす。体長 1cm前後で，腹部が大きく数対の突起をもつものが多い。昼間は草木の葉裏に静止し，夕方から夜にかけて第1脚または第2脚の先から粘球のついた糸を垂らして回転させ，近寄ってきたガにぶつけてからめとる。誘引物質を出して特定のガの雄を集めるといわれる。世界のおもに熱帯でナゲナワグモ属やイセキグモ属など4属約 30種が知られており，日本には本州南部以南にマメイタイセキグモ Ordgarius hobsoniおよびムツトゲイセキグモ O.sexspinosusの2種が分布する。 (→クモ類 )
