Fishing is a method of fishing in which a hook is attached to the end of a fishing line and bait or lures are used to lure fish and other marine animals, which are then caught on the hook. The activities of people who rely on this method for their livelihood and make a living from fishing are called "fishing fishing." Fishing fishing is effective when there are many schools of fish near reefs, making it difficult to catch them using nets and making it necessary to resort to fishing, or when trying to catch fish species that live in deep waters.

釣りは，釣糸の先に釣針をしばり，餌または擬餌等を用いて，魚類をはじめとする水産動物をさそい，釣針にかけて漁獲をおこなう一つの漁法である。このような漁法を主軸にして漁業生産をおこない，生業（なりわい）の主要な部分をたてる暮しをする人々のいとなみを〈釣漁業〉という。釣漁業が有効なのは，魚が多く群れていても，その場所が岩礁付近で，網漁具を使用して魚を捕獲することが困難であり，釣りにたよらざるをえない場合とか，水深の深い場所に生息する魚種をめあてに捕獲しようとする場合である。
