São Jorge da Mina (English spelling)

…The name El Mina (meaning "mine") comes from the fact that sailors on a voyage of discovery to West Africa sent by Prince Henry the Navigator of Portugal in the 1470s found a large amount of gold in the area and named it El Mina (meaning "mine"). After the death of Prince Henry, during the reign of King John II (1482), who took over the business of exploration, a fortress called São Jorge da Mina was built here, and it became an important base for exporting gold from West Africa to Portugal, which was craving gold. According to records from the early 16th century, 8 to 12 caravels brought 400 to 500 kg of gold from El Mina each year to the mint in Lisbon. …
