A idiophone that produces sound when shaken. A type of rattle. Made by drying the spherical or egg-shaped fruit of a Cucurbitaceae plant, hollowing out the inside, sealing in the inside with dried seeds, and attaching a handle. The name comes from the maraca, a fruit of the Cucurbitaceae family. It is usually played with one in each hand, so it is traditionally called maracas in the plural, and is an indispensable rhythm instrument in Latin American music. In modern times, instruments made of wood, metal, or synthetic resin containers filled with beads or metal particles are also popular, but the sound quality is inferior to those made of fruit. There are also some in which the outside of the container is covered with a net of beads.
