Fisheries Exhibition

Japanese: 水産博覧会 - すいさんはくらんかい

One of the measures to promote fisheries during the Meiji period. The first Fisheries Exposition was held in Ueno Park in Tokyo for 100 days from March to June 1883 (Meiji 16). A total of 14,581 items were exhibited from all over the country, and the Emperor was in attendance, drawing in 230,000 visitors, making it a spectacular event. The purpose of this exposition was to grasp the actual regional differences in the development of fishing technology, widely unearth superior technology from advanced regions, and disseminate it to other regions. In the marine product manufacturing sector, the exposition was not only a means of providing guidance on the development of manufacturing technology, but also played a direct role in developing markets for marine products.

明治期における水産振興策の一つ。第1回水産博覧会は1883年(明治16)3月から6月に及ぶ100日間，東京上野公園内で開催された。全国からの出品総数1万4581点，天皇も行幸し，来覧者23万人という盛大なものであった。この博覧会の目的は漁業技術発展の地域差の実態を把握し，先進地域の優良技術を広く掘り起こし，それを他地域に普及させることにあった。また水産製造部門では，たんに製造技術の開発指導事業にとどまらず，水産製造物の市場開拓という面でも直接役だったであろう。
