The position emphasizes the continuity of the Anglican Church with the early and medieval churches, and places importance on the authority of the church, the historical episcopacy, and the sacraments. The English Reformation followed a different path from the German and Swiss Reformations, but theologically it was strongly influenced by continental reformers such as Luther, Zwingli, Butzer, and Calvin, and established its doctrinal position. During the Elizabethan era, when the Church of England was established as a state church, continental theologians, especially Calvin's ecclesiology and clerical theory, were dominant, but at the end of the 16th century, Richard Bancroft, Hooker, and others positioned the Church of England as a branch of the universal (Catholic) Church, and advocated the need for a bishopric based on apostolic succession.
