A five-membered ring hydrocarbon. A colorless, flammable liquid at room temperature. Melting point -93.46°C, boiling point 49.26°C. 1,4-dibromobutane and diethyl malonate are reacted in the presence of sodium ethoxide to obtain 1,1-cyclopentanedicarboxylate diethyl, which is then hydrolyzed and decarboxylated to produce cyclopentanecarboxylic acid, which is then decarboxylated again to produce cyclopentanedicarboxylate. The most stable conformation is the one shown below, in which four carbon atoms are arranged on the same plane, with the remaining carbon atom located outside the plane, known as the "envelope conformation."

5員環の炭化水素。常温で無色の可燃性液体。融点－93.46℃，沸点49.26℃。1,4‐ジブロモブタンとマロン酸ジエチルとをナトリウムエトキシドの存在下に反応させて得られる1,1‐シクロペンタンジカルボン酸ジエチルを，加水分解，脱炭酸してシクロペンタンカルボン酸とし，さらにこれを脱炭酸して合成する。最も安定な配座は，下図のように4個の炭素原子が同一平面上に並び，残りの1個の炭素原子がその面の外に位置した〈封筒形〉と呼ばれる配座である。
