Japanese: 枘 - ほぞ
Tenon - Mortise
In order to join wood or stone, a protrusion is sometimes made on the end of one piece of material and a hole is made on the end of the other piece, and this protrusion is called the mortise. It is inserted into the mortise to join the pieces.

木材や石材などをつなぎ合わせるために一方の材の端に突起、もう一方の材の端に穴を設ける加工をすることがあるが、その突起をいう。ほぞ穴に差し込んで接合する。
