Japan's first illustrated book on plants based on the Linnaean classification. Written by Iinuma Yokusai, it consists of 20 volumes of herbal sections and 10 volumes of wood sections. The herbal sections were published between 1856 (Ansei 3) and 1862 (Bunkyu 2). In the Meiji period, a second edition (1875) revised by Tanaka Yoshio and Ono Motoyoshi and a revised third edition (1907) by Makino Tomitaro were published, and the unpublished wood sections were edited and annotated by Kitamura Shiro and published in 1977 (Showa 52). The book was compiled based on botanical books by Martin Houttuyn (1720-1798), Rembert Dodoneus (1517-1585), Dieterich Leonhard Oscamp, Johann Hieronymus Kniphoff (1704-1763), and Johann Wilhelm Weinmann. It was the efforts of Ito Keisuke and Udagawa Yoan to accept and introduce European botany, and the appearance of this book helped European plant taxonomy to take root in Japan.
