Dalian
A city in the southern tip of Liaoning Province, China. It is located on the southwestern shore of Dalian Bay on the Liaodong Peninsula, and is the largest commercial port in the northeast. It is the terminus of the Shenyang-Dalian Railway. It was leased by Imperial Russia in 1898 as part of its southward expansion policy, and the port city of Dalni was built. After the Russo-Japanese War, it was managed by Japan as the gateway to the Kwantung Leased Territory, and served as a base for its mainland policy until 1945. It was returned by the Soviet Union in 1950 under the Sino-Soviet Treaty, and together with Port Arthur it became Port City, and in 1981 it was renamed Dalian City. It is home to thriving industries in machinery, such as shipbuilding and railroad cars, as well as chemicals, spinning, and food industries. It is also a port for shipping oil from the Daqing oil fields, and is a developing fishing port. Population: 3 million (2014).

Dalian

The highest administrative official in the Yamato Imperial Court. In the latter half of the 5th century, it was placed alongside the Minister (Oomi). The position was hereditary for the military Tomo no Miyatsuko (companion ministers), the Otomo and Mononobe clans, but after the downfall of the Otomo no Kanamura in the mid-6th century, the Mononobe clan was appointed alone. At the end of the 6th century, Mononobe Moriya opposed the adoption of Buddhism and was killed by the Minister Soga no Umako and others, resulting in the abolition of the Omi clan. → Clan and surname system → Related topics Prince Anahobe | Mononobe no Okoshi | Emperor Yuryaku | Emperor Yomei
