China's northeastern part borders Siberia (Russian Federation, former Soviet Union) and northern Mongolia, and its western part borders Central Asia (former Soviet territory). The direct border between the two countries stretches for a total of 7,000 km, and including the border with Mongolia, it is 10,000 km long, making it the longest border in the world. If the border was divided by military districts (military regions) rather than by administrative divisions and listed from east to west, China's Shenyang Military Region (headquarters located in Shenyang) bordered two military districts of the former Soviet Union, that of Far East (Khabarovsk) and Transbaikalia (Chita), while China's military districts of Beijing, Lanzhou, and Xinjiang (Urumqi), via Mongolia, bordered two military districts of the former Soviet Union, that of Transbaikalia and Siberia (Novosibirisk), and China's Xinjiang Military Region bordered two military districts of the former Soviet Union, that of Central Asia (Alma-Ata, now Almaty) and Siberia.
