The former name of a town (Ibuki-cho) in Sakata County, northeastern Shiga Prefecture. The area now occupies the northern part of Maibara City. It is located at the western foot of Mt. Ibuki. The former Ibuki-cho was incorporated as a town in 1971 (Showa 46). In 2005 (Heisei 17), it merged with the towns of Santo and Maibara to form Maibara City. Most of the former town area was mountainous land including Mt. Ibuki and a complex alluvial fan. The area has a well-developed road network, including the Hokkokuwaki Highway (National Route 365). The area is known for the mining of limestone for cement and the cultivation of chestnuts on the alluvial fans. The area around Mt. Ibuki in the east is included in Lake Biwa Quasi-National Park. Suijo is a post station on the northern side road, Ueno is the main trailhead to Mt. Ibuki, Kozuhara retains ancient customs, and its Kenkyo dance is an intangible folk cultural asset of the prefecture.
