Nagahama [city] - Nagahama

Japanese: 長浜[市] - ながはま
Nagahama [city] - Nagahama
A city on the northeastern shore of Lake Biwa in Shiga Prefecture. The city limits include Chikubu Island on the lake. It was incorporated as a city in 1943. The central city, which is served by the Hokuriku Main Line and Hokuriku Expressway, was established in 1573 as a castle town around Toyotomi Hideyoshi's Nagahama Castle. After the castle was abandoned, it became a commercial and industrial port town, and with the city being a sericulture region, textile industries such as Hama Chirimen (crepe) developed. After World War II, industries such as machinery, synthetic resin, and plywood also flourished. The Nagahama Station building, which dates back to the time when the city was connected to Otsu by a railway ferry via Lake Biwa, is a railway monument. In 1993, Lake Biwa became a Ramsar Convention registered wetland. In February 2006, the towns of Asai and Biwa in Higashiasai district were incorporated, and in January 2010, the towns of Torahime, Kohoku, Takatsuki, Kinomoto, Yogo, and Nishiasai in Higashiasai district were incorporated. The area is 681.02 km2 . Population: 124,131 (2010).
