A general term for insects in the Lepidoptera family Thyrididae, or one of these species. This family mainly includes small moths with a wingspan of 1.5 to 2 cm, and the family was named after the fact that many species have transparent patterns on their wings without scales. There are many species in tropical regions, and some large species have wingspans of up to 5 cm, but there are only 28 species in Japan, and none exceed 4 cm. Most are nocturnal, and often fly to lights. Many of the larvae feed by rolling up tree leaves, but some are known to feed on twigs. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
