Pagnol - Marcel Pagnol

Pagnol - Marcel Pagnol

French playwright. Born in a farming family in Aubagne, on the outskirts of Marseille. In 1922, he moved to Paris, where he worked as a high school teacher while writing plays in collaboration with friends. His solo work Topaze (1928) was a great success, and he completed a trilogy of Marius (1929), Fanny (1931), and César (1936), set in his adopted hometown of Marseille. His style of writing, which depicts the stubborn and generous temperament of indigenous men and women with a hint of pathos, remains fresh even today. After World War II, he returned to the stage with historical plays such as Judas (1955) and Fabian (1956), but he no longer has the same feel as he did in the past. After the advent of talkies, he also began writing and directing screen adaptations of his own plays. He also wrote essays such as On Laughter, and novels about his childhood. In 1946, he was elected a member of the Academy.
