The Sultanate of Delhi was a Muslim dynasty that ruled over northern India. It was named after its capital, Delhi, and its Muslim rulers. It is also known as the Delhi Sultanate or the Delhi Dynasties. Historically, it generally refers to the five dynasties spanning 320 years, beginning with the Slave Dynasty (1206-90), followed by the Khalji Dynasty (1290-1320), the Tughluq Dynasty (1320-1413), the Sayyid Dynasty (1414-51), and the Lodi Dynasty (1451-1526). However, in its meaning, it may also include the Sur Dynasty (1538-55) and the Mughal Empire (1526-38, 1555-1858). Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
