A lawsuit that contested the status of black slaves under the United States Constitution. In 1857, the Supreme Court ruled that slaves were not "citizens" under the Constitution, but "property." Dred Scott was a slave living in Missouri, but followed his master to Illinois and neighboring territories, which prohibited slavery, and returned to Missouri four years later. He claimed that he had gained free status by living in a free state and territory, and in 1846 he filed a lawsuit seeking confirmation of this.
