Born on April 4, 1870. Dropped out of elementary school. Studied under Tsuboi Shogoro, and in 1893 became the specimen clerk at the anthropology department of Tokyo Imperial University. In 1922 he became an assistant professor at Tokyo Imperial University, later a professor at Kokugakuin University and Sophia University, and a visiting professor at Yenching University in China. He investigated various places such as China, Korea, Siberia, and Karafuto (Sakhalin), and became a pioneer in anthropological and archaeological research in East Asia. Died on January 14, 1953.
