Fleet Review - Kankanshiki

Japanese: 観艦式 - かんかんしき

An event in which the head of state gathers his country's navy in one area to review it. It began in 1341 under King Edward III of England. Japan's first fleet review was held in 1868 off the coast of Tempozan, Osaka, with six ships totaling 2,450 tons of displacement, and in 1940 off the coast of Yokohama, with 98 ships and 527 aircraft. 17 such reviews were held before the start of World War II. After the war, the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force also held a similar event, called a fleet review, with the Prime Minister acting as the reviewing officer and inspecting the Self-Defense Fleet.

国の元首がその国の海軍を一地域に集めて観閲する行事。 1341年，イングランド王エドワード3世が行なったのが始まり。日本で最初の観艦式は明治1 (1868) 年に大阪天保山沖で催され，艦船6隻，排水量合計 2450tが参加，1940年の横浜沖では艦艇 98隻，航空機 527機が参加した。第2次世界大戦開始まで 17回催された。戦後，海上自衛隊でも同種の行事が観艦式と呼ばれ，総理大臣が観閲官となって，自衛艦隊を査閲する。
