Orangery

… [Nobuo Sugiyama]
[history]
There is a story that in Roman times, a hotbed covered with mica sheets was used to provide Emperor Tiberius with cucumbers all year round, but this was a small, portable greenhouse. Generally speaking, a greenhouse refers to a fixed, permanent structure, and its origins lie in the orangeries (called orangerie in French), which were widely built in 18th-century Europe. The structure has a wall on the north side, a row of large arched windows on the south side, and a slate or tiled roof, and oranges and other Mediterranean fruit trees were grown in this greenhouse.
