In 1954, the four villages of Doi, Uonashi, Yusugawa, and Takakawa merged to form Kurosegawa Village, which was renamed Shirogawa and incorporated as a town in 1959. Population 5,193 (1995). Located in the upper reaches of the Kurose River, a tributary of the Hiji River, the town borders Kochi Prefecture to the east. Apart from lowlands along the river valley, most of the area is mountainous, part of the Shikoku Mountains. Agriculture and forestry are the main industries, and rice, sericulture, and dairy farming are thriving. Timber, chestnuts, and shiitake mushrooms are also produced in abundance.
