Dutch politician. He obtained his law degree from the University of Groningen in 1888 and became a lawyer in his hometown of Leeuwarden. In 1890 he joined the Social Democratic Union, but eventually came into conflict with the Union's leader, Domella Nieuwenhuis. In 1894 he formed the Social Democratic Workers' Party (SDAP, now the Labour Party) with his comrades and became its leader. In 1897 he became a member of the National Assembly and editor-in-chief of the party's journal, Het Volk, and promoted a revisionist and parliamentarian course. He also established friendly relations with the German Social Democratic Party and occupied an important position in the Second International.

オランダの政治家。1888年フローニンゲン大学で法律学の学位を得，故郷レーワルデンで弁護士となる。90年社会民主同盟に加わったが，やがて同盟を指導するドメラ･ニーウェンハイスと衝突し，94年同志とともに社会民主労働党(SDAP。現，労働党)を結成して指導者になる。97年下院議員，党機関誌《人民Het Volk》の編集長になり，修正主義の立場をとり議会主義路線を推進した。またドイツ社会民主党と友好関係を結び，第二インターナショナルで重要な地位を占める。
