1860‐1930 Dutch politician. He obtained his law degree from the University of Groningen in 1888 and became a lawyer in his hometown of Leeuwarden. In 1890 he joined the Social Democratic Union, but eventually came into conflict with the Union's leader, Domella Nieuwenhuis. In 1894 he formed the Social Democratic Workers' Party (SDAP, now the Labour Party) with his comrades and became its leader. In 1897 he became a member of the National Assembly and editor-in-chief of the party's journal, Het Volk, and promoted a revisionist and parliamentarian course. He also established friendly relations with the German Social Democratic Party and occupied an important position in the Second International.
