〘名〙① (「かつら(桂)②」から) 月の世界に住んでいるという伝説上の男。かつらお。かつらおのこ。桂の人。《季・秋》※狭衣物語(1069‐77頃か)四「かつらおとこも、同じ心に『あはれ』とや見奉るらん」② 容姿のりっぱな男。美男子。かつらお。かつらおのこ。※浄瑠璃・出世景清(1685)道行「手にはとられぬかつらおとこの、ああいぶりさは、いつあをのりもかだのりと、身のさがらめをなのりそや」[補注]①は「酉陽雑俎‐天咫」に、古くからの言い伝えとして、月の中に高さ五〇〇丈の桂があり、その下で仙道を学んだ呉剛という男が、罪をおかした罰としていつも斧をふるってきりつけているが、きるそばからそのきり口がふさがる、とある伝説による。
