Bosquet

Japanese: bosquet
Bosquet

...First, Claude Mollet (c. 1563-c. 1650), who was born into a family of court landscapers, developed embroidered flowerbeds in the late 16th century, in which embroidered patterns were copied onto hedges. Then, in the 17th century, A. Le Nôtre introduced strong axes to the gardens, which, unlike those in Italy, were primarily built on flat land and had a geometrical structure, completing a grand style befitting the splendor of the Bourbon dynasty. This is what is generally called the "French style (formal) garden." He defined the main part of the garden with a bosquet (bush) and created a line of sight that stretched to infinity by neatly arranging embroidered flowerbeds and large fountains. In particular, he made use of the canal (waterway) for this purpose. ...

...Tivoli and Boboli Gardens (Florence) are good examples. In French Baroque gardens such as the Palace of Versailles, in order to emphasize the vistas (axis of vision) arranged perpendicularly or radially within the garden, trees were densely planted on both sides of the main axis to create a dark green wall of trees, which was called a bosquet. A park-like urban avenue lined with trees and flower beds is called a boulevard, but it originally began as a wide avenue lined with trees planted on the site of the demolished castle surrounding the city.
