A general term for the technique of embroidering along the threads of a coarse plain weave craft fabric (canvas). It is also called canvas embroidery or section embroidery, and in America it is called needle point. Representative techniques of this technique include the ancient petit point (tent stitch) and gross point (cross stitch), in which the threads of the base fabric are picked up and embroidered vertically, horizontally, and diagonally, so that the pattern is constructed along the weave, and when the entire fabric is embroidered, it looks like woven fabric.
