Tall oil - Tall oil

Tall oil - Tall oil

When pulp is produced by the Kraft process, the raw pulp material is digested with sodium hydroxide and the fibers are separated. This refers to a mixture of by-products such as fatty acids (45-50%), resin acids (rosin, 30-45%), and unsaponifiable matter (alcohols, hydrocarbons, 5-30%). It is usually separated into tall oil fatty acids and tall oil rosin by reduced pressure steam fractional distillation.

Tall Oil Fatty Acids

The yield is about 30%. Its quality is more than 95% fatty acid and less than 5% unsaponifiable matter. The majority is produced in the United States. The main components are oleic acid and linoleic acid, and it does not contain any polyunsaturated fatty acids higher than linolenic acid, and the amount of saturated fatty acids is extremely small. It also contains very small amounts of unique fatty acids. It is used to manufacture azelaic acid, oleic acid, and linoleic acid for paint resins such as alkyd resins.

Tall Oil Rosin

The main component is abietic acid type resin acid. It is used as a paper sizing agent, a synthetic rubber emulsifier, printing ink, paint, etc.
