A club-shaped mobile body on the thorax of dipterous insects such as flies and mosquitoes. It is a degenerate hind wing that vibrates together with the forewings during flight. It also moves independently when stationary. It is thought to be a balancing organ that senses the rotation of the body axis, and there is also a theory that it is a kind of tympanic organ related to flight motion. It is said that if the haltere is removed, flight becomes extremely unstable. In twisted-wing insects, the forewings are modified into halteres, which are also called pseudohalteres.
