Year of death: 28th November 1119 (31st December 1119) Year of birth: Enkyu 5.1.19 (1073.2.28) A member of the imperial family in the late Heian period. The third son of Emperor Gosanjo. His mother was Motoko, the daughter of councillor Minamoto no Motohira. He was raised by his grandmother, Princess Yomeimon'in Teishi. Emperor Gosanjo reigned for only four years before abdicating in favor of his first son, Prince Sadahito (Emperor Shirakawa), and Prince Sukehito's second son, Prince Sanehito, was made crown prince. His father, Emperor Gosanjo, had left a will for Prince Sukehito to succeed him to the throne, but in 1085, Prince Sanehito died of illness, and the following year Emperor Shirakawa made his own son, Prince Yoshihito (Emperor Horikawa), crown prince and abdicated. While Emperor Horikawa had no heir, Prince Sukehito exerted hidden influence and exerted pressure on Shirakawa's cloistered government, but in 1113, a plot to assassinate Emperor Toba, led by the prince's guardian monk Ninkan, was discovered, and he was completely ousted. He was a talented poet, and his Chinese poems appear in "Honcho Mudai Shi" (Poetry without a title), and 17 of his waka poems are included in imperial anthologies such as "Kinyoshu". He was a man of refined taste and highly respected throughout the country, and it was regretted that he was not able to enter the world.
