This labor dispute occurred at eight factories of Kanegafuchi Spinning Co. (now Kanebo) between April and June 1930. It is known as a representative dispute during the Showa Depression. During this period of depression, bankruptcies, wage cuts, and layoffs occurred one after another across all industries, and cornered workers at each factory desperately tried to fight back. The number of disputes and the number of participants increased dramatically, reaching the prewar peak in 1931. However, an important characteristic of disputes during the Showa Depression is that they occurred frequently at small and medium-sized businesses; among larger businesses, disputes were concentrated only in the spinning, coal mining, and urban public transportation sectors.
