Born in Zurich, he became professor of anthropology at the University of Zurich in 1905, but stayed in Paris from 1911 to 1914, during which time he wrote the famous Lehrbuch der Anthropologie (1914), which aimed to standardize anthropological research methods. This became the most representative textbook in European physical anthropology after Topinard's textbook in France, and even after the author's death, a revised second edition in three volumes was published in 1928, followed by a revised and expanded third edition in four volumes from 1957 to 1966, each by his students, and is now widely circulated among researchers around the world. …
