Inagi

Japanese:
Inagi

The title of a local official in the Yamato Imperial Court. It later became a family name. There are two theories about Inaoki: one that it was the title of an official who managed the Imperial lands such as the Mita (farm fields) and Miyake (farm storehouses) or a tax collector, and the other that it was the title of an official who headed a lower-level organization called Agata (county) or Koori (council), but in either case, it was closely related to the Inner Court, the household organ of the Imperial family. The distribution of Inaoki was limited to Kinai and its surrounding areas, and its territory was as narrow as a Go (town) under the Ritsuryo system. When the eight-colored family names were established in 684 (the 13th year of Emperor Tenmu's reign), Inaoki was ranked as the eighth-ranked family name.
