A city in the southern part of Tokyo. It was incorporated as a city in 1971. It occupies the south bank of the Tama River and straddles the Tama Hills and the floodplains of the Tama River. It is a major producer of Tama River pears, and in recent years the number of tourist pear orchards has been increasing. The city is served by the Nambu Line and the Keio Sagamihara Line. The Tama Hills in the south are the eastern part of Tama New Town, which began in the 1960s, and have been developed into a residential area. Area: 17.97 km2 . Population: 84,835 (2010).
