A deep area is a small area of depression in the ocean floor, such as an ocean trench, that is particularly deep and clearly defined by bathymetry of the surrounding area. It was generally used only for areas with depths of 6,000 m or more, but this term is now considered to be discouraged. Deeps are usually named after the ship that made the sounding (e.g., Ramapo Deep, Challenger Deep). The deepest area reported to date is the Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench (10,920 m deep). Deep names are not necessarily proper names, and a given deep name may exist in several other trenches.
