James Albert Michener

American novelist and educator. Born in New York City. Raised by the Michener family as an orphan without knowing his parents, he grew up in extreme poverty. Graduated from Swarthmore College, earned a master's degree from Colorado State University of Education, and became an associate professor of education at the same university before working for a publishing company. He joined the U.S. Navy and won a Pulitzer Prize for his novel South Pacific (1947), based on his experiences in the war. This was made into a musical and a film, South Pacific, which were hugely successful. His other works include The Bridges at Tokoli (1953), Goodbye (1954), Hawaii (1959), an Israeli archaeological historical novel The Fountainhead (1965), The Wanderers (1971), Centennial (1974), Space (1982), Chesapeake Tales (1978), and Poland (1983), many of which became bestsellers. He was an expert on Japanese ukiyo-e and wrote books such as "Japanese Prints" (1959). In his later years, he suffered from kidney disease and underwent dialysis treatment, but ultimately chose to die with dignity.
