German labor law scholar. A social democrat, he worked hard to include clauses such as the right to life and the participation of workers in management in the Weimar Constitution. As a professor at the University of Frankfurt from 1920, he criticized the hermeneutical labor law of Kaskel and others, and advocated the establishment of a new labor law based on sociolegal methods. He viewed labor law as collective law, while drawing on Gierke's theory of collective law. As he was Jewish, he was pursued by the Nazi regime and became a professor at the University of Amsterdam. In response to C. Schmitt's attack on Jewish legal scholars in "The Jews in German Jurisprudence," he emphasized the achievements of Staal, Goldschmidt, Dernburg, Laband, Jellinek, Ehrlich, and others.
