Book of Zephaniah (English spelling) ephanyāh Hebrew

One of the twelve minor prophets in the Old Testament, it is a short work consisting of three chapters. It was written by the prophet Zephaniah in the period prior to the religious reforms of King Josiah (622 BC), who restored the Kingdom of Judah, and in response to the extreme paganism of the Kingdom of Judah under the influence of the Assyrian Empire, Zephaniah criticized the religious decadence of idols and Milcom worship. The theme throughout the book is the coming of the terrifying "Day of the Lord" as the time of God's judgment on the world, and it warns of God's impending wrath and calls for repentance. It is said that Zephaniah sensed God's judgment in the invasion of the Scythians, who swept across the Palestinian region along the Mediterranean Sea around 630 BC. It presents a universal position that the judgment will not only apply to Judah, but also to the surrounding countries (Philistia, Moab, Ammon, Ethiopia, Assyria).

『旧約聖書』中の十二小預言書の一つで、3章からなる短いもの。ユダ王国中興の王ヨシヤの宗教改革（前622）に先だつ時期に、ユダ王国がアッシリア帝国の影響下で極端に異教化したのに対し、偶像、ミルコム礼拝などの宗教的堕落を批判した預言者ゼパニヤの書。神の世界審判の時としての恐るべき「主(しゅ)の日」の到来が全体を貫くテーマで、神の怒りが迫っていることを告げ、悔い改めを求めている。紀元前630年ごろに地中海沿いのパレスチナ一帯を席巻(せっけん)したスクテア人（スキタイ人）の来襲に、神の審判を感じ取ったのであろうといわれている。審判はユダのみならず、周辺諸国（ペリシテ、モアブ、アンモン、エチオピア、アッシリア）をも含むとする普遍的な立場が示されている。
