The capital of the Republic of Lithuania, on the Baltic coast. In Russian it is called Vil'nyus. Formerly known as Wilno or Vilnia. Population 590,000 (1993). Located in the southeastern part of the republic, close to the border with Belarus, it spreads over the river terraces of the Neris River, a tributary of the Neman River, and the hills above it. It is an ancient city built by Grand Duke Gediminas of Lithuania around 1323, and consists of the old town centered on Gediminas Hill and the new town along the river. It is blessed with convenient land and water transportation, and in recent years new industries (machine tools, equipment, electrical products) have developed, making it the main industrial city of the republic, with the eastern industrial district of "New Vilnia" and many housing complexes in the suburbs.
