A city in the southeastern tip of Saitama Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1972. It occupies the alluvial lowlands between the Edogawa and Nakagawa rivers, and has been a producer of early-season rice since the early Edo period, but greenhouse horticulture and other forms of suburban agriculture have also become established. The Musashino Line was opened in 1973, making it a junction between the Joban and Tokyo Outer Ring Expressways and the Metropolitan Expressway. It borders Tokyo's Katsushika Ward and Matsudo City, and since the 1960s it has seen rapid development into a residential area with the construction of factories and the Misato Housing Complex. 埼玉県南東端の市。1972年市制。江戸川と中川の間の沖積低地を占め,江戸時代初期からの早場米の産地であるが,都市近郊農業として施設園芸などが定着している。1973年武蔵野線が通じ,常磐・東京外環両自動車道と首都高速道路との結節点をなす。東京都葛飾区,松戸市に接し,1960年代以降工場の進出や,公団三郷団地などの建設に伴う住宅地化が著しい。2005年つくばエクスプレスが開業。30.13km2。13万1415人(2010)。
