A battle that took place in 1071 between the Byzantine army and the Seljuk army led by Alp Arslan near the fortified city of Malāzgird, about 50 km inland from the northern shore of Lake Van in eastern Anatolia. The numerically inferior Seljuk army won a great victory thanks to the efforts of slave soldiers (ghurami), and the Byzantine Emperor Romanos IV himself was taken prisoner. This marked the start of an influx of Turks into Anatolia. [Shimizu Kosuke] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
