The Flemish Cipriano de Rore (c. 1515-65), who promoted the use of chromaticism and bold dissonance in sacred vocal music and madrigals, and Zarlino, who composed sacred vocal music and madrigals and is known especially for his systematic treatise Le istitutioni harmoniche (1558).
