After Willard's death, the position was succeeded by two of his students. The Flemish Cipriano de Rore (c. 1515-65), who promoted the use of chromaticism and bold dissonance in sacred vocal music and madrigals, and Zarlino, who composed sacred vocal music and madrigals and is known especially for his systematic treatise Le istitutioni harmoniche (1558). In 1613, Monteverdi, who played a major role in the transition from the Renaissance to the Baroque style and who established immortal milestones in many fields, both sacred and secular, and who also made important contributions to early Venetian opera, became the Kapellmeister.
