Dryopithecus - Doriopitekus (English spelling)

Dryopithecus - Doriopitekus (English spelling)

A large fossil primate that lived from the late Miocene to the early Pliocene of the Tertiary Period. Its name means "oak tree monkey". It is said to have once lived in forests and lived an arboreal life. It was discovered by the Frenchman Larté in 1856, and was the first fossil ape to be studied academically. Today, many fossils have been excavated from various parts of Europe, Africa, and Asia, most of which are jaw bones and teeth. Many scholars have attempted to classify these specimens, and they have even been considered to be in the same genus as Sivapithecus and Proconsul. There is a Y-shaped groove on the biting surface of the molar, which is found in the first lower molar of most modern humans, and so it was once considered to be an ancestor of humans. Today, it is thought to be an ancestor of modern great apes, or a close relative of them.
