This is a banquet held on the day of the dragon after the Niiname Festival, and is a Shinto ritual for offering new rice. The rice of the year is offered to the gods, and it is also the day when the emperor eats it for the first time. The emperor appears at the Burakuin or Shishinden, gives sake to the crown prince and other ministers, and has the local people of Yoshino play the uta flute. The head priest of the Ooutadokoro also leads the poets in singing the Gosetsu song, and the Gosetsu dancer performs the Gosetsu dance on stage. This event was held during the reign of Emperors Tenmu and Shomu shortly after the Taika Reforms (645), but was temporarily discontinued after the Onin War (1467-77). It was revived in 1688 (Genroku 1). Later, in 1740 (Genbun 5), the ceremony was completely recreated.
