Capital of the ancient Phrygian Kingdom. Latin name: Gordium. Inhabited by the Phrygians from the 10th century BC, it became their capital in the 8th century BC and flourished under King Midas at the end of the 8th century BC. It was destroyed by the Cimmerians in the 7th century BC, and was subsequently ruled by Lydia, the Achaemenid Empire of Persia, Macedonia, Galatia, and others, before falling into ruins at the end of the 2nd century BC.
