…Christian saint born in Spain in the 3rd century. According to legend, he was recognized by Pope Sixtus II and made a deacon in Rome. He was arrested during the persecution of Emperor Valerian, but was given three days of reprieve, during which time he distributed church property to the poor and sick. When he was arrested again and asked to hand over his property, he presented a crowd of poor people, which enraged the officials, and he was roasted to death on a grill. During the reign of Emperor Constantine the Great, the church of San Lorenzo fuori le mura was built over his tomb in Rome. …
