...German-born paleontologist and anthropologist. He studied paleontology at the University of Munich, and in 1931 joined the Geological Survey in Bandung, where he engaged in paleontological surveys in various parts of Java. From 1931 to 1933, he participated in the excavation of the Solo Man ruins in Ngandong, and with the cooperation of local collectors, he worked to collect Pleistocene hominin fossils, discovering mandible B of Pithecanthropus, skulls II, III, and IV, and the mandible of Meganthropus. He also bought keels and dragon teeth from Chinese medicine shops in Bandung and Hong Kong, and among them he discovered a molar of a huge extinct ape, which he named Gigantopithecus blacki. ...
