Rothenburg (English spelling)

Rothenburg (English spelling)

A small city in Bavaria, southern Germany. Located on the banks of the Tauber River near the border with Baden-Wurttemberg. Population 11,882 (1980). Its name first appeared in historical documents in 1144 as a territory of the Hohenstaufen dynasty. Around 1200, it was surrounded by a city wall, and around 1241, a city law was established, and it became an imperial city in 1274. During the German Peasants' War in 1525, the citizens cooperated with the peasants to form the Taubertal Peasants' Association, and besieged Marienberg, the castle of the Bishop of Wurzburg, but was defeated. During the Thirty Years' War (1618-48), it was besieged and occupied three times, and in particular, when it was occupied by General Tille of the imperial army in 1631, it is said that the mayor drank a large cup of beer in front of the general, and thus saved the city from being burned down. Since then, this has become an annual commemorative event (this story is now preserved in the puppet mechanism of the clock tower of the city hall). It became part of Bavaria in 1802. It has retained most of its medieval features, including its city walls, numerous towers, Jacob's Church with its altar sculpture by Riemenschneider, one of Germany's leading sculptors of the 16th century, and rows of old houses, mostly made up of timber-framed buildings, making it one of Germany's leading tourist cities.
