A former town in Shimomashiki District, central Kumamoto Prefecture. In 2000, Toyono Village was incorporated as a town. Toyono Village was formed in 1889 when Toyoda District and Okumano District merged. It is surrounded on three sides by mountains with an altitude of 40 to 350 meters, forming a small basin. In the western hills, there is the ruins of Jousui-ji Temple, which existed from the Nara to early Heian periods, and four stone monuments bearing inscriptions from that time remain. The main industry is agriculture, with rice, livestock, tomatoes, melons, and other crops thriving, and Toyono Agri Park has been established to promote this industry. In the mountains in the northwest, there is Hagio Reservoir, a famous fishing spot. 熊本県中央部,下益城郡の旧町。2000年豊野村から町制。豊野村は1889年の町村制施行により豊田郷と小熊野郷が合併して発足した。三方を標高40〜350mの山陵地に囲まれ,小盆地を形成する。西部丘陵地には奈良〜平安初期に存在した浄水寺跡があり,当時の紀年銘をもつ四つの石碑が残存。主産業は農業で,米作,畜産のほかトマト,プリンスメロンなどの栽培が盛んで,アグリパーク豊野を設け振興を計っている。北西部の山間には釣場として有名な萩尾溜池がある。2005年1月宇土郡三角町,不知火町,下益城郡松橋町,小川町と合併し市制,宇城市となる。31.54km2,5179人(2003)。
